How to Clean Your Composite Deck
Updated May 7, 2020
Deck maintenance doesn't have to be so hard...
You’ve built a beautiful deck onto your home or cabin, but you want to know how to safely and effectively clean it so it will stay looking beautiful, year after year. Well, we have a few tips here to get you started.
Sponge method: great for cleaning specific problem spots on your deck.
Items you will need:
- Bucket of water
- Dawn dish soap OR composite deck cleaner (found at your local home improvement store)
If you choose to use the composite deck cleaner, prepare it according to the instructions. Spray off your deck with water. Dip your sponge into the deck cleaning solution and scrub the sticky spots. Rinse away the soap when finished. Use this method on oily spills, or areas where pine sap may have gotten on your deck.
Pressure washer method: great for regular maintenance of your deck, once or twice a year.
- Pressure washer
- Fan-tip nozzle
- Soap attachment
- Dawn dish soap or composite deck cleaner
Use a pressure washer with a fan-tip nozzle and soap dispenser. First, sweep off any debris such as leaves or pine needles from your deck. Second, spray down your deck with a hose. Then, use the pressure washer with the soap or composite deck cleaner. If you choose to use dish soap, check your power washer instructions to make sure the soap is okay to use with it. Some power washers only allow you to use a composite deck cleaner.
Scrub areas that are really filthy with a brush or sponge.
Operate the pressure washer at the lowest setting. Be sure to stay at least 8 inches away from the deck boards to avoid damage. Rinse the soap away thoroughly. This method is great for cleaning your deck once or twice a year, to keep it looking new.
